Why emotional intelligence is vital at leadership positions?
When I was a child, my parents always use to give examples of very intelligent children, toppers in the class, and I was quite fascinated with them. But it was disheartening as well because it’s difficult to be like them- IQ is something you are born with…RIGHT? and if you have average IQ then it feels impossible to compete with them…Later I heard about the concept of emotional quotient(EQ) and it meant knowing how to behave in order to get your way through anything. Emotional Intelligence, or emotional quotient (EQ), is how we handle ourselves and relationships, It’s an individual’s ability to identify, evaluate, control, and express emotions.
So, friends being intelligent is one thing and being emotionally intelligent is the other. When we start our careers then our degrees, percentages, educational institution matters the most. But when we reach at the leadership level the story changes. Floor affect applies at leadership level. Above average IQ is ok, but everybody at your level is more or less, as smart as you are, therefore at leadership level IQ drops as a predictor of success and only EQ remains.
In leadership role you have to make strategies, and once the strategy is decided you can only apply it through PEOPLE, you have to communicate, persuade, listen, dialogue, inspire, motivate and all of these are emotional intelligence skills.
Therefore, if you want to be successful in leadership roles, you have to be emotionally intelligent. The good news is IQ remains same at 15 as it is at the age of 50, emotional intelligence on the other hand, is a flexible set of skills, it can be acquired and improved with practice.
